Chapter 19: The Key in the Lock

Bob shook his head. It was late and he probably should have been in bed, asleep. But he had this feeling that he was so close to solving this puzzle. He’d never been one to give up easily. His dogged determination had been the result of many breakthrough patents in the world of AI and robotics and he knew there were few puzzles that couldn’t be solved if you looked at them from enough different angles and with a lot of research and testing. He wasn’t frustrated. He knew that multiple educated failures eventually brought results most of the time and he hadn’t been working on this one for long enough to be discouraged.

Bob was no stranger to burning the midnight oil and although the rest had already gone to bed, he just needed a little more time on it right now. He stared once again at the metered readings they had done with the card and the key. They had tried a number of things, including having Anela hold the card while touching her key, trying to have her give a command to the card via mindspeech while touching both the key and the card, among other things. None of these had produced any noticeable results after that first small success.

Then at one point, there had been a noticeable reaction. But Burt couldn’t figure out what had happened. The gate vibration meter had gone wild for a fraction of a second and then subsided. He was sure that was some kind of a breakthrough, but what?

This was why he was standing here in the lab while everyone else was comfortably sleeping in their beds. He decided to put up the video surveillance footage one more time, slowing it down considerably with the idea of pinpointing the event where the meter responded and seeing what he could glean from that perspective.

As he watched, Alena very slowly touched the card to her key and held it there. There was the slight variation they had already seen in previous times. Bob had hoped that by her holding the card and touching the key at the same time and simultaneously giving a mental command for a specific gate, that it would work. They had her sitting on the edge of the table, instead of laying down since they had already determined that the contact didn’t seem to affect her in any way they could tell. However, he remembered that at this point Merv had entered the lab. Alena had turned and unbalanced. Bob had reached out to steady her and…THERE! He paused the video. The meter was peaking nearly off of the chart.

Bob examined the picture carefully. He had already looked at the screenshot of the meter for that time from every angle he could think of, but this was the first time he had viewed the footage of the entire scene.

They were frozen in that moment. Alena had her head turned and he could see Merv
